How to be a WEdding content creator
OKAY— there is NO gatekeeping here. If you’ve been wondering what it takes to be a wedding content creator (also known as a day of content creator), then you are in luck!
I like to write my blog posts simple and to the point, but sometimes there is just SO much value to include, so bear with me… This might be a long one!
What is a wedding content creator?
First, lets chat about what a Wedding Content Creator does. They take behind-the-scenes footage from an iPhone of weddings, bachelorettes, bridal showers, work outings, and more… They deliver raw videos and photos taken throughout the day within 24 hrs of the event, piece together an edited short form video recap of the event, make trending TikTok’s/Reels, and some even offer to do a story take over for client’s social media accounts.
Now that we got that out of the way…
What do I need to do become a wedding content creator?
The credentials are fairly simple:
the newest (or second to newest) iPhone
Dropbox
Editing App
Gizmo
Time
Talent
Lets get into…
THE iPHONE
Its (almost) spring 2024, so you should be capturing content with the iPhone 15 Pro Max or iPhone 14 Pro Max. You have to think camera quality. Both of these phones are really great camera options, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a 5x quality zoom option which is cool and comes in handy!
DO I NEED TWO PHONES?
I have both the iPhone 15 Pro Max + 14 Pro Max. I do use two, but you honestly do not need two. The iPhone 15 Pro Max offers a 1tb option of storage which will be ideal for personal phone use (apps, etc.) and also for work essentials like video storage, editing app use/storage. Did I mention your phone is a tax write off!? Woohoo!
DROPBOX
If your client doesn’t have an iPhone, Dropbox is your bestie. Add all your hundreds of videos and photos into a folder and share the link via text or email. Easy peasy.
ICLOUD
If your client has an iPhone, you could create a “shared folder” in your iCloud and add all footage in there instead. This also allows you to delete all the content on your phone with easy access to download it again to use for marketing use.
EDITING APP
I like using Cap Cut. I find it really easy to use and it’s on your phone! It’s also free to download and you can upgrade to the “pro” version (oh hey, tax write off!). Some creators use desktop versions, but I personally find it easier to keep everything in one place— on my phone.
GIMBAL
This, this, this. This will ensure your videos are smooth and not shaky! It also adds a touch of professionalism to your look helping so you seamlessly blend in with the media team.
TIME
You simply need time to offer wedding content creation. Weddings are an all-day event. I offer different packages which cover different amounts of time, but you still need to be set aside time outside of the wedding to upload content, create the recap video, make other short form videos, marketing, communication between clients prior to the event, field research, filming technique practice, and probably more that I can’t think of right now.
TALENT
You have to have an artistic eye. Although the primary reason someone hires a wedding content creator is for all the behind-the-scenes footage, you want to stand out and deliver good quality footage. Finding the right angle, lighting, etc. will boost your video quality.
Additionally, you don’t want shaky, grainy videos. Learning which lighting is ideal and different iPhone settings to record in will help you deliver the quality you would want to receive.
** I cannot include every ounce of information in this post. So, subscribe for a detailed blog specifically on how to capture content with an iPhone at high resolution / quality, taxes, editing, etc.
How do wedding content creators work with the media team?
Photographers are the unspoken media team leader. DO NOT overstep. Stay in your lane unless asked otherwise. This is REALLY important because you do not want to photobomb any pictures or mess up the photographer’s timeline. If the photographer’s timeline is thrown off the whole wedding timeline tends to get thrown off too. If your client wants specific TikTok’s/Reels, make sure it is communicated with the photographer, so time allows it (also the glam team too if it includes a before and after of some sorts). Just remember the primary goals of wedding content creators is to capture the raw behind-the-scenes moments. We work alongside and behind the photographer and videographer. I know you want to get the shots, but please be aware of your surroundings.
How to build a wedding content creator Portfolio
To build your portfolio, you may need to offer your service at a substantial discount or even for free. This will give you credibility, experience, and examples to show off your talent! Would you hire a photographer without seeing their work first— probs not. Same goes with Wedding Content Creators.
Conclusion
